Welcome to Vaal Academy
The Vaal is an area nestled in the south of Johannesburg. Its community has made an extensive contribution to history and struggle of South Africa. Two of its townships, Sharpeville and Boipatong, are known to have endured the most gruesome massacres in 1961 and 1992 respectively. With the Vaal being the birthplace of the Constitution of South Africa the Academy intends using the sombre memory of the Apartheid era to make the youth aware what the struggle was for and make them rise from its ashes.
Since its informal formation in 2013 by Moroa Kobeli, the Academy has worked exntensively with township schools within the Vaal. The organisation’s first programme involved reading and writing workshops for Grade 3 learners at Orange Farm Primary School. On 16 March 2017 it had its fisrt major project-concert called Vienna in the Vaal was hosted at Hoerskool Drie Riviere with the assistance of the Austrian Embassy. This even afforded the local youth to share the stage with two classical pianists from Austria, one of whom is originally from the Vaal
The mission of the Academy is to expose disadvantaged youth to opportunities that remain exclusive only to the advantaged.
